Backlink Building

Backlink Building is a common SEO tactic to gain ranking and indexing fast. Backlink building in the eyes of Search Engines means that other webmasters trust you and are willing to link to you. Backlinks are the backbone of Page Rank in my eyes and many other SEO Experts. There are an assortment of different types of backlinks that you can obtain.

  • Sidebar or Footer Backlink
  • Affiliate/Partner Page Backlink
  • Comment Backlink
  • Profile Backlink
  • Directories Backlink
  • Paid Links Backlink
  • Link Farms Backlink
  • Forum Backlink
  • As you can see there are a ton of different backlinks you can obtain. There are many more listed but these are the most common types of backlinks.

For this article I will be covering Backlink Building from a generic point of view. With Backlink Building you don’t have to be specific because the Backlink Building listed here should help you to obtain good quality backlinks.

    Sidebar or Footer Backlinks

These types of backlinks are obtained by contacting the webmaster of the site in question and asking for a link to your site. Most of the time if you just show up asking for a backlink they will just blow you off and ignore you. What you need to do is read up on their material from the site in question. Post a comment here and there to gain the “trust” of the webmaster. After doing this you could start emailing the webmaster and saying how wonderful the site they run is. After a few emails you could start pulling the conversation more towards your site. Once you gain their trust and they feel you aren’t some beggar looking for a free link they will more than likely give you a sidebar or footer backlink.

    Affiliate/Partner Page Backlinks

Affiliate or Partner Page Backlinks are obtained usually through visiting the site in question and talking to the webmaster back and forth about their site and your site. Once you have built up a good friendship with the webmaster you may both decide to become affiliated or partnered. After becoming affiliated/partnered you can be added on the Affiliate/Partner page on the site in question. By doing this, if there is ever a time later on down the road you will possibly have someone who will vouge for you and your professionalism.

    Comment Backlinks

Comment Backlinks are some of the easiest backlinks to gain at the moment. These backlinks require little or no effort on your part to gain. Comment backlinks are gained by visiting a site and commenting on a post or article the site has. Comments on these sites usually have a “website” field in the comment form. If you happen to find that a site is closely related to what you have then you possibly could get away with doing a hyperlink with Anchor Text relating to your niche or keywords. Make your post seem genuine and definitely make it not seem spammy. If the comment smells like spam, whether or not it is, the webmaster will delete it without thinking twice. If you do a search related to your keywords try to look for .edu or .gov blogs as these have a high “Trust Rank” and authority when it comes to the SERPS(Search Engine Result Pages). By gaining links from high authority sites this will allow you to do less backlinking than the average webmaster. As they say 50 good quality backlinks are worth more than 500 non-targeted backlinks.

    Profile Backlinks

Profile backlinks come from somewhere you may have a profile. Say you have a profile on facebook and you link to your site. This is called a profile backlink. As with all backlinking, finding a high authority site with a decent Trust Rank and a good PageRank will benefit you the most. Web 2.0 sites are starting to become the new thing for using as backlinks. Some of a few good places to have profile backlinks include: Identi.ca,Squidoo, and LinkedIn. Identi.ca is more or less a small social network that functions around people joining groups. Squidoo is a blog where you can create “lenses” which are pages pertaining to your specified subjects. LinkedIn is a place where professionals can go to group up and meet with other professionals of the same or different fields. None of these sites or most other profile sites require more than taking the time to register in order to gain a profile backlink. These are the easiest to gain as in difficulty, but they require time in order to create them.

    Web Directory Backlinks

Web directories provide you the opportunity to place yourself within a category of your choosing. A lot of the time these carry high PageRank. It used to be that a few directory submissions would boost your SERP ranking. Google in their infinite wisdom decided to stop giving the web directory backlinks so much juice. In SEO terms any backlink(except for Link Farms which I will cover shortly), are a good backlink. One directory that still carries a lot of weight with the Search Engines is DMOZ.

    Paid Link Backlinks

Paid Link Backlinks may sound like something that the Search Engine may not allow you to have but before you jump to conclusions about it let me explain to you what a Paid Link Backlink is. Paid Link Backlinks come in all shapes and sizes and are usually placed within an Advertisement for your site. When you pay for Ad Space on another site you are buying a “timed Paid Link Backlink”. The untimed version of a Paid Link Backlink is just how the title explains. These fall along the same lines as the timed but you either pay a monthly fee to the webmaster or pay each time someone clicks the Ad or completes a signup on your site. Paid Link Backlinks are good for gaining high quality targeted traffic. To gain a Paid Link Backlink you need to contact the webmaster of the site in question and ask about ad pricing. You and the webmaster can work out the details from there. Just know that these kind of links are the most expensive, but also the most targeted way to gain traffic.

    Link Farm Backlinks

These are the kind of backlinks you don’t want to get. These backlinks can cause your site to at minimum take a steep hike to the Sandbox(out of top 1000 results) and at maximum cause your site to be de-indexed by the Search Engines. A Link Farm is just what is sounds like. These pages have a high amount of links coming in and a high amount going out. These links are slammed together on pages with no useful or sometimes no content and the Search Engines automatically understand what’s going on. Google is infamous for slapping down the big “G” ban hammer. Many of sites have been smashed by the ban hammer. By keeping away from Link Farms this will help to keep your site alive and unscathed from the ban hammer.

    Forum Posting Backlinks

Forum posting is a great way to get free backlinks. If you place a link to your site on a profile of a forum, every time you post there is another backlink. The only problem is that the Search Engines only count 1 of the backlinks per URL. A lot of people out there say that they only count 1 link to your site from that domain. I have found the opposite to be true. As in SEO terms they count all the links but not as much. See below for an example of what i’m saying:

Original Link has full link juice power per URL. Say you have an article about zebras and post from URL A pointing to your Article A. Then you have an article about Elephants and you post on URL B pointing to Article B. These links are going to carry some weight with them(no pun intended). They may not carry the full amount of Link Juice but they are going to be carrying some juice.

As you can see there are many possible types of backlinks you can gain. There are many more than what is listed here. This is just a generic guide to backlink building. I hope by reading this it helped further your knowledge of White Hat SEO.

    Bookmarking

Bookmarking is one of those things you have to do. Bookmarking in White Hat SEO is a form of backlinking from an authority site. Authority sites are sites which the Search Engines view highly in terms of “Trust Rank”. Trust Rank can easily be defined as how much the Search Engine trusts the site. The Search Engine assigns a rank(Trust Rank). Bookmarking sites include but are not limited to:

  • Digg
  • Del.ico.us
  • Reddit
  • These are just a few examples and believe me there are way too many to list

What we are going to do is take the links from your pages and bookmark them. This way you will be gaining a little bit of “Trust Rank” and “Link Juice” from the authority site you are bookmarking from. In the pictures i’m only going to be showing you the Digg example as I can’t really go through all of the bookmarking sites and and show pictures.

Firstly if you haven’t already done so you’re going to need to create a Digg account. After creating an account you can proceed to follow the steps listed in the images below:

Click the “Submit New” text which will bring you to the next screen.

Now here is where you input your post/page address(URL) and select which type it is. In our case it will be “News Article”. Go ahead and place in your URL and click News Article and hit continue.

You should see the image above followed by the image below.

Edit the description to contain your key phrase(s) and choose a category. Fill out the captcha information and do a double check of your bookmark to make sure it seems great. After clicking submit you have one final step involved with bookmarking. PINGING THE FEED. Look up top on your submission complete page for an orange icon with a small dot and soundwaves up under the search bar for Digg. Right click it and copy the location(we will be using shortly). In order for your site to start jumping up in rankings quicker, you need to “let everyone know” that something has been updated. There are many pinging services out there, both free and paid. I myself use Howie’s Pinger. It is set up for use by logging in with username: guest | password: guest. Pinging is a subject I will not be going into great detail at the moment but here is a quick overview for Howie’s Pinger.
  • Click Add Feed
  • Fill out form
  • Ping
  • Now you have successfully bookmarked a page on your site. So you may be asking yourself “What’s next?” Back Link Building . This is the most strenuous and time consuming part of White Hat SEO. Back Link Building will be covered in an upcoming article here: Back Link Building

    White Hat SEO Techniques

Now that we know which keywords we are going to target, it’s time for us to get down to what has to happen. For my example i’m going to be using the phrase “article writing tips”.

First thing to do for White Hat SEO:

    Onpage SEO
Optimizing you SEO per page is the best way to go. By doing this it will extremely benefit you way more than a super amount of backlinks. Don’t get me wrong, the more backlinks the better. A lot of times though you will find that pages SEO optimized to the max with a low amount of backlinks will do better than a page that is minimally SEO’d with a ton of backlinks. Now onto the good stuff!

The onpage SEO has many ways of being implemented. There is White Hat SEO, Black Hat SEO, and Grey Hat SEO. In this article I will only cover the White Hat SEO techniques. The first thing we need to look at is our page title and ask ourselves “Does my target keyword(s) go with the title and are they in the title?” Well if they are in the title then you can skip section 1 and move onto section 2.

White Hat SEO Section 1:Optimizing Titles
Your title needs to contain your target keyword(s) or key phrase(s). They should be placed within an “H1″ tag. This tells the Search Engines that this is an important part of your page and tells about what the page/post will more than likely contain. By placing the target keyword(s) or key phrase(s) in your heading it shows “importance”. If you are targeting more than one key phrase then the most important key phrase should go into the H1 tag. The next important should be in a H2 tag, and so on and so forth.

White Hat SEO Section 2: Keyword Optimization

Now that your titles are White Hat SEO style Optimized you can move onto keyword optimization. Look over your post/page and determine if there are any places within them where you could substitute words such as “it” with your target keyword(s) or key phrase(s). To SEO your post/page you’re going to have to do some rewriting. You want to make your keyword(s) or key phrase(s) prominent to show that they are important and the point of the post/page to the Search Engine. By using your keyword(s) or key phrase(s) for no more than a total of 5-8% your post/page won’t appear to be keyword stuffed and will be human readable as well as Search Engine readable. Keyword stuffing is a bad practice to do. This can cause you to lose readership and possibly face a penalty by the Search Engines which usually result in either de-indexing or a blow in your rankings.

    REMEMBER:Don’t stuff your keywords!!

    White Hat SEO Techniques

So your looking to get into White Hat SEO? Well that’s where I come in. In this multi-part series i’m going to help ease your adventure into White Hat SEO so that you aren’t sitting there going…huh?
A little knowledge for the beginners. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The purpose of SEO is to gain traffic through certain key phrases that are searched through a Search Engine(Google, Yahoo, Bing, AOL, etc). By targeting these phrases you can gain traffic from the SE’s. There are several ways to target. You can target single keywords(hardest), 3 word phrase(easier), and Longtail phrases of 5-7 keywords(easiest). You always have to remember the more specific the phrase is, the less possible traffic you will receive(less searches).

    First and foremost

Figure out your keywords or phrases that you wish to target.
This can be done many ways:

    1. Using Keyword Cloud tools to find most used keywords on your site.
    2. Manually reading through your site and picking them out.
    3. Using Keyword Cloud plus a Keyword Tool
Option 3 usually helps get the optimum results. For this section of the White Hat SEO series I will only be covering option 3 as it is the best choice by far.
First head on over to Web Confs Keyword Density Checker HERE. Input your website url that you are looking to boost your SEO on. For my example I will be using Brush Writes. This is another site of mine that I operate.
    Keyword Density Checker Tool

Once you have put your url in you should get something like the image below. Please note that your keywords will be much different then the results shown here.

    Keyword Density Tool Results

Now comb through your results looking for the most prominent keywords(bigger = more prominent). After finding about 4-6 keywords, try seeing if they relate to each other to form a phrase. If they do, congratulations you just found yourself a longtail keyword phrase to target. Now onto our next step in the lesson: Targeting
